This footage of Chicago in the 1940’s plays like a love letter and gives us an amazing look back in time. It’s inspiring to see how our skyline has changed while so many neighborhoods, museums and parks have remained the same.
A message from our owner:
“Believe what they say, 30 years goes by in the blink of an eye. But when I think back on the beginnings of Art Effect it seems like decades ago! Art Effect started as a wearable art gallery, showcasing clothing and accessories made by Chicago artists. Very 80’s! We have evolved over the years, always changing with our customers interests and now carry contemporary clothing, jewelry, accessories and an incredible gift selection. Much of our jewelry is still artist made.
I have evolved from a young, energy filled, black haired woman to an older, less energized, white haired woman! But still love everyday as an entrepreneur. We have made our home on Armitage and really feel like we helped define the neighborhood. We love seeing our longtime clients bringing in their grownup children and grandchildren. And the new crop of Art Effect shoppers always make us feel young and relevant. We are so grateful to all of them in contributing to our successful 30 years.”

Our block is among the most beautiful in Chicago. Lined with historic storefronts dating from 1870-1930, the Armitage-Halsted District in Lincoln Park was granted landmark status in 2002. Looking up, we are treated to corner turrets, bay windows, pressed metal cornices, terra-cotta ornaments, and brick and stone patterning in architecture unchanged from the Victorian era. The Armitage El station, just west of our shop, was opened in 1900 making it one of the oldest train stations in US history to be in continuous operation. Treelined cross streets are filled with stately brick row-houses and graystones. Our storefront at 934 W. Armitage opened in 1906 as Shinnick’s Drug Store. The original Armitage Hardware, across the street from Art Effect on Armitage and Bissell, operated as a prohibition era speak-easy and it’s rumored that Al Capone ran a tavern on the block.
Take a moment to appreciate the view and be inspired by our colorful history!
